Volunteers are invited to spend a day on the Kentucky River to help start the summer with a clean environment. The 22nd annual Kentucky River Clean Sweep needs volunteers who can collect trash and debris along the 12 miles of river in Fayette County on Saturday, June 15.
This event is part of the Ohio River Sweep, a multi-state river cleanup that encompasses the entire length of the Ohio River, including nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline and many tributaries, from Pennsylvania to Illinios. The Kentucky River Sweep is one of many cleanups scheduled in Kentucky as part of this effort.
The River Sweep is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from the Clays Ferry Boat Dock to the Valley View Ferry dock. Volunteers should gather at the Clays Ferry Boat Dock off KY 25 under the I-75 overpass between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. to start the cleanup.
Volunteers will receive free breakfast and lunch, a t-shirt and a chance to win raffle prizes from local businesses. Trash bags, gloves and some life vests will also be provided. Volunteers should wear sturdy clothing, boots or close-toed shoes and life vests to clean up the river.
At least a dozen or more boats are needed to transport the 80 or so volunteers who dedicate their Saturdays year after year. We are always in need of volunteers who have extra room on their boats for other volunteers.
