UK HealthCare plans to lease and renovate the former Dillard's location at Turfland Mall on Harrodsburg Road for consolidation and relocation of some of its primary care and specialty outpatient clinics, according to an announcement today at a press conference.
UK HealthCare will be the anchor tenant for the first floor of the building utilizing approximately 85,000 square feet, officials said. The clinic will consolidate patient services of UK Family & Community Medicine, which currently sees patients at both the Kentucky Clinic on the UK campus, and at Kentucky Clinic South, located on Harrodsburg Road.
"Today's announcement is about convenient access to quality patient care in our community," said University of Kentucky President Dr. Eli Capilouto in a release. "Of equal value is the redevelopment and revitalization of this area through this project."
In addition to Family and Community Medicine, patient services relocating to the new site will include the UK Orthopedics & Sports Medicine clinic currently located at Perimeter Drive, and UK Occupational Medicine & Environmental Health and the UK Travel Medicine clinic, both currently located at Kentucky Clinic South. Other outpatient clinics and services may also be relocated in the future.
“Health care is one of the largest sectors of our local economy and one of the fastest growing, thanks in large part to UK’s leadership in the field at the local, state and national levels,” Mayor Jim Gray said. "... And with this announcement, UK is also making health care services more convenient for Lexington citizens, while bringing new life to Turfland Mall.”
The renovation is targeted to be completed and clinics open to patients in fall 2014.
"Renovating and utilizing the former Dillard's building is a great opportunity for both UK HealthCare and the Lexington community," said Dr. Michael Karpf, UK executive vice president for health affairs. "Not only are we revitalizing and redeploying a large vacant building in the community but we will be providing a convenient, easily-accessed location for our patients."
Patients currently seeing physicians and health care professionals who are relocating to the new facility will be receiving information about the transition during the coming weeks and months as details are available.
