EDITORS NOTE: Lexington lost a great friend with the passing of Sam Barnes on July 20th. Just as he respected and beloved by this community we call home, Sam was near to us here at and Smiley Pete Publishing. He was a supporter of in many ways including the role of occasional guest writer. Sam's byline appeared in the pages of at least three times in 2010, including in both of our July issues.
The following column on the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games originally ran in the July 13th edition of Weekly Wire and we had, prior to Sam's death, decided to include it in the July 23, 2010 print edition as well.
Since the launch of this publication in May, 2005, the final few pages have been devoted to commentary about issues and events important to the economy and life of our city. Because of its placement and content, the section has always carried the moniker "Parting Thoughts." As an unfortunate coincidence, this edition had already been printed when word came of Mr. Barnes' untimely and tragic death while on vacation in preparation for his son's wedding. Our hearts are with the Barnes family, his friends and coworkers at Fifth Third Bank and the many in the community who benefited because of his work and love for Lexington as well as his friendship.
