When it comes to my domestic life, I don’t run a very tight ship. Some would say that this observation spills over into my professional life as well, but I try to avoid people who say that.
I can’t get anything done. A pile of laundry that needs to be washed or folded always awaits, and it seems like there’s continuously some neglected surface wanting to be dusted (an attentive visitor recently had the gall to tell me that my baseboards could use a good swabbing, to which I said they should probably avoid the bathroom). My refrigerator and cabinets are constantly vacant, and yet there’s always dirty dishes starting to crust in the sink. My car needs an oil change, and my hair could use a trim. Not only does my grass need to be cut, my lawnmower needs to be fixed. I can’t find the time to tend to any of it, and I don’t even have pets or kids.
I’m not lazy, I’ve just become a fine connoisseur of my free time. When it comes to a nice patio seat spent in the company of friends or mopping a perpetually gritty kitchen floor, what do you think wins out? It’s definitely not the unopened Swiffer Sweeper and the bucket.
It’s not that I want to live in squalor, I’m just easily distracted by fun things, and unfortunately, I’m also easily amused, just not by cleaning or errands.
Fortunately, it’s summertime and my excuses for not keeping things shipshape, which are ample, are much more plausible – it’s a lot harder coming up with legit excuses in the winter, but I manage.
In Lexington this summer, rest assured there won’t be any lack of distractions, and we’ve made it easier to find them with our annual Summer Entertainment Guide. Stuffed with hundreds of music, art, theater and other local performance and festival listings, even the most disciplined and diligent will have trouble not putting whatever project on the back burner while they head out to be entertained.
I know I will, but at least I’ll try to do some laundry so I don’t have any stains in my clothes when you see me.
