Bike Lexington events rolling throughout May
Throughout the month of May, dozens of bicycling activities - including safety demonstrations, community rides, commuter challenges, maintenance workshops, advocacy meetings and sporting events -
will be scheduled throughout Lexington as part of the city's annual month-long Bike Lexington event, which culminates on May 30 with the 10-mile Family Fun Ride and other festivities downtown.
Bike Lexington began in 2003, and has grown in size and scope, and participation, each year.
Events are scheduled every day, with some being geared for more serious cyclists (such as the Horsey Hundred on May 28, a two-day, 100-mile bicycle ride through central Kentucky) and others being appropriate for leisurely riders (such as the Bike-In Movie night in Cheapside Park on May 26).
For a complete list of scheduled events, visit www.bikelexington.com. The site is continually being updated, so be sure to check back frequently. Even after May, the site is meant to function as a year-round, ongoing calendar of cycling-related events.
Southside organizations receive neighborhood
sustainability grants
Recipients of the 2011 Neighborhood and Community Sustainability Grants were announced by Mayor Jim Gray on Earth Day, April 22. Grant awards were available by application to homeowner associations, churches and schools and provide funds up to $2,500 for projects such as community and food gardens, rain barrel installation, greenway development, tree planting and beautification efforts.
This is the third year of the grant program, and 25 organizations received a total of $50,000 for projects that promote environmental stewardship and beautification.
Grant recipients are required to provide a 100 percent match, which can be in-kind services or materials. Organizations that receive grants this year must complete their projects by April 30, 2012.
