to showcase in Lexington
Through Sept. 4, the Central Library Gallery is featuring an exhibit of original illustration art from the monumental picture-book series "Little Golden Books," which is now approaching its 70th year.
Little Golden Books began publication during the second World War, offering high-quality illustrated books at affordable prices to millions of young children. Artists involved included European emigres, alumni of the Walt Disney Studios and American originals.
Sixty masterpieces chosen from the Random House archive will be featured in the exhibition. On July 28 at 6 p.m., literature historian Leonard Marcus will discuss the importance of Little Golden Books and sign his book, "Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children's Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became an American Icon Along the Way." Popular theatre production gets a second run
at Milward Funeral Home
After performing three packed-house performances of the Jeffrey Hatcher play "Three Viewings" in June, On the Verge theatre company has announced a revival of the play for July 22 - 24 at Milward Funeral Home's new 7,500 square foot funeral and reception center on Trent Boulevard.
Although the performance will take place in a funeral home, there's nothing macabre or lugubrious about the play. Based on the premise that there is a story behind every farewell in a funeral parlor, "Three Viewings," directed by Ave Lawyer, focuses on three funeral-centric vignettes starring local actors Robbie Morgan, Adam Luckey and Samantha Doane-Bates. The theatre group focuses on untraditional and site-specific performance, having conducted plays at the Hunt-Morgan House and Bodley-Bullock House as well.
Milward's Trent Boulevard location, which opened in December, is different from people's standard perception of a funeral home. Although the exterior looks similar to the company's Southland Drive facility, the lifgt and airy interior offers an open concept design with 40-foot-high ceilings, skylights and a stone fireplace in the great room, and the facility is suited to host a variety of gatherings, including church get-togethers, anniversary parties and wedding rehearsals, as well as funeral services.
Showings of "Three Viewings" are scheduled for 8 p.m. July 22 - 23 and 2 p.m. July 24. For tickets ($20) or more information, visit www.ontheverge.org.
