Wellington Elementary has received a $2,500 Neighborhood and Community Sustainability grant to construct a Japanese Zen garden, according to a school press release.
Wellington, which teaches Japanese to all students, was the only school in Fayette County to receive such a grant this year. The 4-year-old program provides funds to local organizations for sustainable and beautification enhancements, such as food gardens, rain barrel installation, greenway development and tree planting. Recipients are required to provide a 100 percent match, which can be in-kind services or material.
Other Southside organizations to receive a Neighborhood and Community Sustainability grant include: Twin Pines Christian Church ($688 for a community garden), Tankbark Association of Neighbors ($2,500 for rain barrels), First Alliance Church ($1,957 to create an amphitheater in a water detention area), Walnut Creek Homeowners Association ($2,500 for planting street trees), Southpoint Resident Association ($1,285 for beautification of neighborhood entrance), Dove Creek Townhome Owners Association ($1,655 for beautification and landscaping) and Beaumont Residential Association ($2,500 for park benches).
