Twenty-six students in Fayette County Public Schools are semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. Some 16,000 academically talented high school seniors will now compete for more than $32 million in awards next spring.
From Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, the semifinalists include: Sarah Bush, Dustin Doss, Corrine Elliott, Deborah Ferguson, Michael Halwes, Trevor Krolak, Jessie Li, Corey Lockridge, Abhyudit Lohe, Vania Ma, Joseph Natter, Casey Ren, Melanie Schmocker, Maria Wang, Leia Wedlund and Rebecca Williams.
The remaining FCPS semifinalists were from Henry Clay High School.
About 90 percent of semifinalists generally advance, and more than half of those students will win scholarships underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corp., business organizations and universities. The scholars will be announced in four waves from April to July.
