Are you frying a Thanksgiving turkey this year? Lexington’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works, Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) and Griffin Industries are offering a way for you to recycle the used cooking oil in an environmentally-friendly manner at the third annual Gobble Grease Toss.
The Gobble Grease Toss will be held from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at the old landfill pad at 1631 Old Frankfort Pike. You can dispose of cooking oil and grease responsibly at the Gobble Grease Toss for free. Citizens should bring the oil in a sealed container to help prevent spillage. This is available for Fayette County residents only; no businesses, please.
Cooking oil and grease should never be poured into toilets, sinks or other sanitary sewer drains. Fats, oil and grease (FOG) solidify in sewer pipes and cause problems. In your home, FOG can lead to slow running drains, odor issues and even sewer backups. In the city’s sanitary sewer lines, FOG can cause significant clogs that lead to sanitary sewer overflows - the discharge of untreated sewage into streams, yards and roads.
The cooking oil brought to the Gobble Grease Toss will be collected by Griffin Industries and recycled into environmentally-friendly products such as alternative fuels, animal feeds and organic fertilizers as well as ingredients used in soaps, cosmetics, paints, water repellents and rubber.
