Lexington neighborhoods will become a little greener and more sustainable as 20 local organizations receive grants from the city for their environmental efforts, according to a press release.
In April, Richard Moloney, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works, announced 20 grants are being awarded to neighborhood groups, churches and schools throughout the city.
“Our neighborhoods are improved as citizens and groups work together to implement these project all across Lexington,” Moloney said. “These projects will improve the environmental health of our neighborhoods, making Lexington an even more attractive city.”
The projects include rain gardens, an outdoor environmental classroom, street tree plantings and community gardens. The grant amounts, which require a 100 percent match, range from $1241 to $2500 in size.
The grant recipients are:
• Blue Grass Christian Camp: $2437 for creating a recycling program.
• Bluegrass Community and Technical College: $2500 for restoring riparian areas and developing a solar powered water catchment system. • Crossroad Christian Church: $820 for installation of a rain barrel shed.
• Dove Creek Townhomes Owners Association: $2500 litter clean up and street tree planting project.
• Fairway Neighborhood Association: $2500 for street trees and a landscaping shrub planting project.
• Georgetown Neighborhood Association: $2500 for a community garden project.
• Glendover Neighborhood Association: $2500 for planting street trees.
• Idle Hour Neighbors Alliance: $2215 for three planting beds.
• Idle Hour Neighbors Alliance: $2338 for a community garden.
• Lansdowne Elementary School: $2500 for an outdoor classroom for environmental and science education.
• Maxwell St. Presbyterian Church: $2500 for the creation of a literacy sanctuary.
• North Limestone Neighborhood Association: $2500 for a street tree planting project.
• Saint Peter Catholic Church: $2458 for a beautification project.
• Tanbark Association of Neighbors: $2500 for a beautification project.
• Temple Adath Israel: $1914 for an urban garden.
• Transylvania Park Neighborhood Association: $2500 beautification project for Transylvania Park.
• Twin Pines Christian Church: $1885 for a community garden project.
• Walnut Creek Home Owner’s Association: $2500 for beautification project.
• Wellington Elementary School: $2500 a Zen Garden expansion project.
• Williams Wells Brown Neighborhood Association: $1241 for a beautification project.
