The annual Global Lens film series will return to Lexington after a three-year hiatus, with seven films from South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia shown free at the Farish Theater in the Central Library during January and February.
The Global Lens series was last shown in Lexington in 2011 at the Kentucky Theater. Films shown at the Farish Theater will be from the 2012 film series. They include:
7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7: "The Prize" (Argentina, 2011)
Under the cloud of a military dictatorship, a young mother and daughter flee Buenos Aires for the seclusion of an Argentine beach, but the political crisis finds the girl at her new school in the form of a patriotic essay contest sponsored by the same army that may have taken her father.
2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11: "Grey Matter" (Rwanda, 2011)
In this “film-within-a-film” a Rwandan filmmaker looks to a loan shark to fund his film about a brother and sister dealing with the aftermath of genocide.
7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21: "Toll Booth" (Turkey, 2010)
A tollbooth attendant working a desolate country road begins a flirtatious relationship with a woman who drives by each day, which could mean salvation for the aging bachelor or a further unraveling of his mind.
2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25: "Mourning" (Iran, 2011)
A deaf couple driving a newphew back home to Tehran discuss his future in a language not as private as they believe, turning the car trip into a humorous and compassionate meditation on communication and emotional disability.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5: "Pegasus" (Morocco, 2010)
An emotionally-exhausted psychiatrist helps a traumatized and pregnant woman raised as a son by her father, a horseman chief whose legacy demanded a son.
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15: "Fat, Bald, Short Man" (Colombia, 2011)
A lonesome, middle-aged man faces his shyness and insecurity, finding that his status improves with the help of a new boss and a self-help group.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19: "Craft" (Brazil, 2010)
A talented but underemployed actress in Rio de Janeiro makes her living portraying female movie icons at private events, but an audition leads to an opportunity for redemption.
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26: "Amnesty" (Albania, 2011)
A man and woman who meet during conjugal visits with their spouses in prison form a bond that is threatened when a prisoner amnesty threatens their relationship.
