Sarah McDowell Preston’s Milk Lemonade
The book “The Historic Kentucky Kitchen: Traditional Recipes for Today’s Cook” (University Press, 2013) by Deirdre A. Skaggs and Andrew McGraw features dozens of historic Kentucky recipes that were discovered in the archives of the University of Kentucky’s Special Collections library. Among them are this recipe for Milk Lemonade (from the archives of Sarah McDowell Preston, granddaughter of Virginia Governor and Congressman James McDowell).
As Skaggs points out in her cookbook, this recipe, which combines dairy and acid, raised some initial concerns. Milk and lemons somehow just don’t seem to go together, but in fact, as this refreshing summer drink reveals, when done right, they can actually complement each other quite nicely.
Ingredients:
• 2 cups boiling water
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup of lemon juice
• 1/4 cup sherry
• 2 cups milk
Bring the water to a boil and add the sugar, stir until dissolved. Add the lemon juice and sherry and cool completely. Chill in refrigerator and then add milk. Serve over ice. ss
