Since the city of Lexington and Fayette county merged in 1974, the resulting entity has been known as the "Lexington Fayette Urban County Government" (LFUCG). The aim of the consolidation was to better coordinate community planning to bring to an end what had been an ongoing, haphazard scramble to extend services to a growing city with ill-defined boundaries, and to more evenly distribute the burden of taxation. LFUCG was appropriate at the time, and over the years has served to readily define the structure of local government. In this age of competitive and concise branding, is it time to consider a new moniker for our community? Or, does the term continue to serve a purpose and therefore should it be maintained?
