Lexington, KY - The Kentucky General Assembly convened for the first four-day portion of a two-part session on January 6th - - "the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January," as stipulated by state law. Part Two, when legislators get down to business, convenes on February 3. In this odd-numbered year of 2009, the session may not last more than a total of 30 legislative days, and cannot extend beyond March 30. A so-called "short session," it does not deal with budgetary issues.
In the interest of highlighting top issues related to business and the economy, the legislative priorities of various organizations were requested for this edition. Education tops the list of most, but many also are concerned about healthcare and retirement reform in the public sector.
