Lexington, Ky. - Lexington Public Works and Environmental Quality Commissioner Cheryl Taylor has abruptly resigned. Taylor held the key role of overseeing the city's compliance with an EPA decree to repair its sanitary and storm water sewers.
"She resigned. We wish the situation were different. We wish her well," said Susan Straub, spokeswoman for Mayor Jim Gray.
Straub said Susan Bush, director of the city's Division of Environmental Policy, has agreed to serve as interim commissioner until a permanent replacement for Taylor can be recruited.
Straub refused to comment on a reason for Taylor's decision to tender her resignation.
Taylor, once an engineering manager at Proctor & Gamble who went on to become Kentucky's Environmental Protection Commissioner, became Lexington's first Environmental Quality Commissioner when she was named to the post by then-Mayor Jim Newberry in 2007. Taylor left LFUCG in 2010 for the position of production manager at Kentucky American Water, returning to the Urban County Government following Gray's election as mayor.
Taylor has not yet been reached for comment.
