The north end of the Legacy Trail, at Spindletop Hall on Iron Works Pike, has been selected as the location for the 2012 Reforest the Bluegrass. Community volunteers are needed for the 14th annual tree planting project in Lexington.
Reforest the Bluegrass is an effort to restore streamside forests that were once native to the Bluegrass area. The Legacy Trail is located next to Cane Run, a stream that originates near the Loudon Avenue area of Lexington and runs north into Scott County.
Trees at past Reforest events were planted at Masterson Station Park, Coldstream Park, Jacobson Park, Veterans Park and other locations throughout Fayette County.
City agencies, such as the Divisions of Environmental Policy, Streets and Roads, and Parks and Recreation, are joined by private partners to plan and support the event, including Lexmark.
Trees planted during the event provide a boost to water quality, an outcome not lost on Kentucky American Water, another corporate sponsor. Other sponsors include Paul Miller Autogroup, Fortune Collision Centres and Kentucky Utilities.
