Higher learning in Lexington takes on a sly, literal twist with the opening of Alltech Brewing and Distilling Academy.
The academy opened this week as part of Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co., a division of the Nicholasville-based nutrition company. The brewing and distilling operation produces a variety of beers and spirits, including the award-winning Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale.
Alltech said the academy will be the only one in the state to teach both brewing and distilling techniques. Company founder Pearse Lyons said students will be taught in a state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory, noting the stark difference from often shadowy past practices.
“Brewing and distilling used to be a rather quiet industry in Kentucky, but today, a new brewery or distillery opens every day,” Lyons said in a statement.
Much of Alltech’s wide-ranging business endeavors are connected by the use of fermentation and yeast.
The classes, which will include short courses for home brew enthusiasts and longer technical inquiries, will be taught by company experts and others.
“We’re really here to serve the little guys and the big guys,” said Phil Miller, director of the Alltech Brewing and Distilling Academy. “We want to welcome everyone here to learn, whether you are new in the field of brewing and distilling, or whether you have been in it for 35 years.”
The academy is located on Angliana Avenue, where the Brewing and Distilling Co. has some of its operations. More information on upcoming classes is available at www.alltechacademy.com.
