An unknown number of employees have agreed to leave the Lexington Herald-Leader as part of a round of buyouts, newspaper officials said Tuesday.
“We achieved our target goal through our voluntary separation plan,” said Rufus M. Friday, president and publisher of the McClatchy Co.-owned newspaper. He declined to provide information about the number of people accepting a buyout, and it also was unclear how many might come from the newsroom or other operational areas.
Friday said the buyout and early retirement plan was announced and offered at the beginning of the month.
The move follows the McClatchy Co.’s announcement last month of a first quarter loss of $11.3 million from continuing operations. That was down from prior year’s quarterly loss of $16.1 million from continuing operations.
