The National Avenue area, the burgeoning urban corridor east of downtown near the popular Kenwick and Mentelle neighborhoods, is being rebranded as "Warehouse Block," complete with signs and a stylized logo.
Walker Properties, which has developed much of the former light industrial area into a growing mixed-use commercial sector, announced the name recently, saying the time is right to celebrate the growing mixed-use commercial area.
“It’s the perfect time to let Lexington know there’s a new neighborhood in town,” said Greg Walker. Greg Walker owns Walker Properties along with his brother, Chad, and father, Randy, who decades ago began buying and renovating properties in the area.
The area has been a hotbed of commercial activity, with high-profile anchor tenants such as the ever expanding National Provisions joining upstart boutiques and fitness centers to form a vibrant community.
Or as Greg Walker termed it: “An eclectic mix of community-minded business.”
He said he, his brother and father came up with the name and worked with Shatterbox to develop the logo. He said tenants were given final choice between Warehouse Block and another branding alternative.
“We had narrowed it down to two very well-polished names,” Walker said. “Warehouse Block was one vote away from unanimous ... which gave us a lot of confidence that we had the right choice.”
Walker said the name and logo will be used in a variety of ways to promote the area, and tenants can use it free of charge.
“We only ask that they don’t alter the design,” Walker said. “But this is really for the tenants.”
Walker said the branding will dovetail with a Warehouse Block party scheduled for Aug. 21.
“We’re going to celebrate. We have a lot to celebrate,” Walker said. “We’re going to close off National Avenue to make way for live music and vendors. We hope to make that something we do fairly regularly.”
