Lexington, KY - Any amount of time spent at the Explorium of Lexington (formerly the Lexington Children's Museum, but re-branded in 2005 because "museum" just wasn't becoming to children) will bring out your inner kid.
With a host of educational and entertaining exhibits - permanent and rotating - the Explorium wants to promote interactivity with children and parents, and with the hands-on installations, which are a mixture of high-tech and amusement. All the exhibits have (short) explainers parents can read their children to help facilitate understanding, and to appear like they know what they are talking about.
Aside from a venue where kids and parents can drop in, the Explorium is also host to school field trips and overnight sleep-ins with local groups and organizations.
Special programming is also a mainstay for the organization; recent events such as Germs Exposed, Winter Solstice Stories, Cultural Diversity and Holidays Around the World keep the Explorium fresh and relevant.
Volunteers are needed in just about every capacity, including light office work (if you'd prefer to be away from the excitement). Other volunteers read stories or help with crafts, while some, if they have a particular expertise in a field of work, have the opportunity to teach specialized classes in subjects like yoga, Spanish and photography.
Gallery docents are needed one day a week from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. to assist with hands-on demonstrations in the galleries, and gallery aides are needed to help the staff create and maintain exhibits.
