How did a retired horse trainer of 18 years become a wine shop and restaurant owner? It seems like a far stretch, but for Burk Kessinger Jr., the years of traveling with the industry, both here and abroad, helped ripen his appreciation for fine wines and good food.
“I learned a lot about wine in Europe and living in New York City, New Orleans, Miami…,” said Burk. “After I retired from the horse industry, I needed something to do and this just fit.”
Burk opened his wine bar, Wines on Vine, in December 2004 and six months later opened his deli––which he says is now considered more of a bistro.
“We’re open for lunch and dinner and, currently, we are working on a new spring menu,” said Burk. “Also, on Saturdays we have free wine tastings.”
Since opening four years ago, Burk’s wine repertoire has expanded. Among his favorites are Morgan Pinot Noir, The Croze Cabernet, and Hope the Ripper Shiraz.
“We’re the only true wine bar in Lexington,” said Burk.
