Saint Nick has been flying the friendly skies for as long as we all can remember. What a difference he has seen! Every year, more and more homes to visit. Why, in the past 100 years the human population has increased from 1.5 billion to 6.7 billion. That's more than four times more people, four times more presents to make and deliver. Santa has had to increase his staff each year just to keep up.
Who could have predicted that the jolly old elf would ever have job security concerns?
Things are changing, though, even at the North Pole. The foundations of his workshops have been solid as a rock for generations, built on ice and snow that never shifted. Now these foundations need repairóthere are big cracksóand the snow is gradually disappearing.
In his travels, he sees fewer birds and animals, fewer forests. Lots more houses and cars, though. Flying is more dangerous; there are more thunderstorms and rough weather. Santa knows that things are altering quickly, too quickly. Can humans survive? Will he have a job in another 100 years? Or even 50 years?
Santa Takes a Stand
Yes, in the interest of preserving his employment, Santa is taking a stand. 'Be good' now has a whole new meaning. Tree hugger Santa is stocking up on lumps of coal for those of us who are environmentally insensitive. (On second thought, no more lumps of coal, either.)
Gardeners, that means us! More than 90 percent of the land in Kentucky is privately owned. The red-suited one knows that we can make a difference.
