Lexington, KY - March brings the promise of warmer weather, as many editorial columns and reminisces this side of the Tropic of Cancer are apt to remind readers this time of the year. Yes, it has become clichÈ, but at least it's true.
For many, warmer weather brings a renewed interest in anything outside. Exercising, playing in the park, sitting on the porch, hobnobbing on restaurant patios -
these are all activities people begin to look forward to in March. Especially gardening, a pursuit we oblige this time every year with our first of two Home & Garden sections. Along with a handful of other timely features, we've compiled a list of relevant seasonal events and classes many organizations in town are offering to the public. Look it over - no matter how accomplished of a gardener you may be, you will probably find something interesting to do with seeds this spring.
For me, the only time I care about being outside in March is when I'm walking to a cable-subscribing friend's house to mooch some ESPN off of them. That's right, the only seeds I care about in March are NCAA basketball tournament seeds. While others may be plotting where they're going to grow their precious heirloom tomatoes, I'm plotting the University of Kentucky Wildcat's advancement (all the way to the Final Four, of course) in a number of different scenarios played out in the stack of tournament bracket sheets I fill out.
While this year's squad might not have the luster (or record) of last year's much hoorayed team, expectations, as always, are just as high. Fortunately, for me, this year's team photographed just as well as the last, and I was able to shoot all of the home games at Rupp Arena this season (and looking at the team's Southeastern Conference road record -
one for six prior to the regular season closer in Knoxville, Tenn. -
I'm glad I was only shooting at Rupp).
I know the local market is saturated with all things Kentucky basketball, but I hope you will check out our galleries from this year's home games.
I hope you wallow in the madness as much as I do this March. That garden bed will just have to wait until April.
Editor's Note: Along with the SEC and NCAA tournaments, March also marks the birthdays of this magazine's editorial team. Saraya Brewer will turn 29 on March 10 and I'll be turning 30 on March 11. Please tell our bosses how good of a job we're doing by e-mailing info@smileypete.com in lieu of presents.
