Barrett
Henry Clay High School senior Barrett Block was runner-up in the 2013 “Jeopardy!” Teen Tournament and pocketed $35,600 in prize money.
The 15-student tournament was filmed the week after Thanksgiving in Los Angeles. It aired on CBS from Jan. 30 through Feb. 12.
After blazing through the early rounds, Barrett faltered a bit in the two-day finale – trailing the eventual champion by a 4:1 margin going into the Final Jeopardy category: military men. Barrett came up with Dwight D. Eisenhower, who said on June 6, 1944, “The eyes of the world are upon you,” and his all-or-nothing wager propelled him into second place.
“It felt terrific to make it to the finals,” Barrett said. “I tried my best to get as many questions right as I could and not miss any, which is easier said than done, but it’s the only fail-safe strategy. It worked very well up until the finals, when I had a tremendous amount of difficulty getting buzzed in.”
Barrett is the fourth Henry Clay student since 2007 to compete in the Teen Tournament. Three from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School have won it: Papa Chakravarthy in 2006, John Zhang in 2003 and Fraser Woodford in 1993.
