In a riveting District 3 championship match, the Eastern Little League American 12-year-olds baseball team defeated Richmond National in a come-from-behind, last-inning effort.
The all-star team, whose players compete during the regular season at Ecton Park’s baseball fields, goes on to the state little league tournament in Prestonsburg, which begins July 20.
During the contest, Richmond jumped up to an early 6-0 run in the first three innings. After the fourth inning, Eastern Little League had tallied only one run, but with two runners on base and back-to-back home runs by Daniel Clinkinbeard and Seth Cowan in the fifth inning, they pushed the score to 5-6 for the last inning.
Eastern didn’t allow Richmond any runs in their last at bat, and started the bottom of the sixth down one. The first two batters for Eastern were thrown out at first, but the next two batters were walked. With two outs, Cowan got a base hit and drove the two runners on base in to the win the game.
