Lexingtonians' farm-fresh food options expand this weekend with the debut of the Chevy Chase Farmers Market.
The market will run Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in parking lot of Corner Wine, 835 Euclid Ave.
Bourbon n’ Toulouse owner Kevin Heathcoat and Bill Farmer Jr., the 5th District councilman and owner of Farmer’s Jewelry, decided to make a long-standing plan a reality.
“The [Chevy Chase Business Owners] association had talked about this for the past several years, but it just wasn’t happening,” Heathcoat said. “This year we decided to push a little harder.”
The market will be operated by Soaring Oak Farm out of Harrodsburg and Farmer Joe’s out of Salvisa. Pasture-raised meats will be sold along with seasonal vegetables.
“All our meats are raised on pasture,” said Farmer Joe’s owner Joe Weber. “Especially our lamb and beef, they are completely grass-fed.”
Weber said they also offer duck, chicken and pork that are all raised on pasture but require a supplemental grain in their diet. Weber stressed the grain they use is non-GMO.
Weber said much of the food would be from the two main farms but the market also will include offerings from other farms. “Everyone we source from, we know personally,” he said. “We won’t be selling anything we’re not sure about.” Heathcoat said the market would run all summer and that he and Farmer hope it’s successful enough to return yearly.
“This is kind of a test to see if the neighborhood will support a small, local market,” he said. “If it goes well we definitely want to do this again.”
