Artists from The Latitude Artist Community have partnered with the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass in a new project called Comfort Creature Project. The project brings ‘Comfort Creatures’ – eclectic and handmade stuffed animals constructed of repurposed upholstery fabric – as new friends to children recovering from sexual abuse and trauma. ‘Comfort Creatures’ is a creative medium between the two organizations, which gives Latitude artists the opportunity to give a new friend to children as they complete a counseling session at the Center.
An art studio and advocacy center based in the National Avenue district now dubbed "Warehouse Block," Latitude serves all people but particularly those who are considered to have an intellectual disability. The Children’s Advocacy Center works to provide medical exams, advocacy services, and trauma-focused therapy to children who have been sexually abused, in a nurturing, receptive and safe environment.
In promotion of the project and partnership, the Latitude Artist Community will auction off two handmade Comfort Creatures with a "virtual auction" via Facebook starting at 9 a.m. on July 23 and ending at 7 p.m. on July 24. All proceeds will go toward the Children's Advocacy Center.
