Every young local band has to get its start somewhere, and often that break can come through marketing – or even just an effective venue space. Chris Mattingly, a music teacher of 21 years and owner of the community music school Lexington Music Education, started the My Generation Concert Series with the purpose of giving young local talent, typically middle- and high-school age, a support system and an outlet into local venues. The events are also providing the under-21 youth of Lexington with a safe place to acquire a feel for a real concert experience, both as audience members and musicians.
“A lot of people won't take the younger kids seriously. Plus, there's a lot of kids who aren't into sports, and music is their thing. They need an outlet,” said Mattingly. “What I do is create a safe, stable environment to help kids stay focused. If they are with me, I can make sure they don't get into mischief.”
Started in September 2016 through a grant from LexArts, the series has enabled Mattingly to open doors of opportunity to many of the talented musicians that he works with.
“I’m really excited about new music, and I love it when they write songs,” said Mattingly. “I love when a kid comes in for guitar lessons and six months later is playing in a band. It’s cool to watch a beginner become an expert in such a short amount of time.”
The My Generation Concert Series not only places an emphasis on performing music, but also gives bands the opportunity to learn the business side of the equation. The concept functions from top to bottom as an all-around effort from the bands, including tasks such as setting up the stage and making flyers, Mattingly said.
“The bands are always learning new ways to make money, which is mostly in concessions,” he added.
Mattingly has partnered with Smiley Pete Publishing (this publication’s parent company), the office of which will serve as the venue space for the series’ third installment, on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 7-11 p.m. Inside Smiley Pete’s Tadoo Lounge (located at 434 Old Vine St.), My Generation will host six bands, including Mojo Thunder, The Unknown, The Funky Punks, Johnny Conqueroo, Point Seven and Dead Note. Five dollars gets you in the door for this all-ages concert.
“I want to develop a good scene locally. I know there is a lot of good talent here,” said Mattingly. “Kids are going to Cincinnati and Louisville every weekend to play. It's important to keep that talent here, because the rock scene and the music scene in general is growing. It will be interesting to see what they do in five to ten years.”
