According to organizer Tony Huffman writes, this poetry slam welcomes “original, provocative, and acerbic works that capture the spirit of Dada and apply its guiding principles to the most pressing concerns of our contemporary moment.” Consideration will also be given to innovative re-interpretations of famous Dada recitations. Performances may take the traditional form of slam poetry, or include more experimental formats that involve sound poems, cut-up technique poetry, musical compositions, costumes/props, visual aids, etc.
Huffman’s prompt suggests the following topics: “Malleability of words, sounds, meaning (play of language); Banality, prosaic babbling in the 21st century, misplaced trust in originality; Climate change; Critiques of capitalism; Gun violence; Pharmaceutical profiteering and / or debates surrounding healthcare; Trumpism(s); Global xenophobia and resurgent nationalism; Cult of celebrities / postmodern spectacle / artificiality in pop culture; Food waste / resource mismanagement / maldistribution of wealth.”
Performance ideas/texts should be emailed to tony.huffman0218@gmail.com by July 24, 2017 (selected participants will be notified soon after). Performances will be 2-3 minutes in length, and artists are invited to stay after to discuss their work with interested audience members.
