An evening with Louis Michot of 2024 Grammy Winning Band Lost Bayou Ramblers, Hosted by Tom Turino Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology, University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana.
This lecture will discuss the evolution of Cajun Music in America. Starting in 1755 with the French voyage to the land now known as Louisiana and exploring the beginning vocal music traditions which soon added fiddle, percussion, and accordion. We will listen to some of the first recordings from the 1920s and follow how country and western influenced Cajun music during the 1940s and how Cajun music traveled beyond Louisiana to find new audiences at the Newport Folk Festival and a new flourishing since the 1960s.
