EXPANSION is Lexington’s Psychedelic Rock Music Festival that celebrates surreal, alternative art and music. On September 13th—14th, some of the best national and local psych bands will perform at Cosmic Charlie’s and The Burl alongside immersive art installations and lights by amazing visual artists. This year's music lineup is headlined by DEAKIN (Animal Collective), doom psych rockers Ruby the Hatchet and dreamy beach pop from Sugar Candy Mountain as well as local standouts Sweet Country Meat Boys, Leaden Verse, Seahags and more! Visual artists include analog retro liquid light shows from Silver Cord Cinema, trippy glitched-out projections from Psensibil, yovozol and more!
Saturday night at The Burl will feature the following acts:
DEAKIN: Headlining EXPANSION 2019 is multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter DEAKIN, the solo artists best known as a member of the experimental pop outfit Animal Collective. After a brief hiatus from the band to record his solo album Sleep Cycle, DEAKIN is back as a permanent fixture with AnCo - but he's taking a break from their headlining festival sets to melt faces at EXPANSIONl! DEAKIN's performance will feature visuals from audio-reactive projection-mapping artist Psensibil.
Ruby the Hatchet: Stoner/Doom Rockers Ruby the Hatchet's psychedelia-laced power-rock conjures visions of midnight councils and sinister sorcery, appropriating a storm of distorted axe-wielding as a vehicle of enchantment, with seductive songstress Jillian Taylor overlaying a series of bewitching spellbound poetics. RtH's performance will feature visuals by analog liquid light duo Silver Cord Cinema.
Sugar Candy Mountain: Oakland-based neo-psychedelic pop group Sugar Candy Mountain fuses retro, sun-drenched sounds with lush, complex productions. This quote sums them up perfectly: "If Brian Wilson had dropped acid on the beach in Brazil and decided to record an album with Os Mutantes and The Flaming Lips, it would sound like Sugar Candy Mountain - featuring space-age sounds and far-out frequencies from the tripped-out tropics." SCM's performance will feature retro, glitched-out analog VHS visuals by Yovozol.
Lasso Spells: Nashville-based Lasso Spells breathes new life into old-school sounds, swirling together a range of influences - including garage rock, '60s and '70s psych, and cosmic country - into music that nods to the past while still pushing forward. Their most recent record, Bohemian Mechanics is a record of melodic, moody West Coast psych, filled with pop melodies, garage-surf guitars, pedal steel, amplified fuzz, reverb-heavy riffs, stomping percussion, and the steady swoon of Bett Dudash's voice.
Visual Artists: EXPANSION prides itself on being an event that is just as visual as it is musical. As such, we have paired each artist with an amazing live visual artist. This year, EXPANSION will feature visuals by Silver Cord Cinema (analog liquid light shows), Psensibil (projection-mapping visuals), Yovozol (glitched-out analog VHS projections) and Dead A/V (liquid light projections), as well as art installations created by the EXPANSION team.
