Local group OTTO (Otto Helmuth, Tim Welch, Chad Ward and Josh Wright) celebrates its debut, self-titled release.
About the band: Helmuth and Ward formerly played a Lexington band called The Blueberries along with Andy Mason, which toured much of the country in the 1990s, playing with national acts that include Uncle Tupelo, Alex Chilton, Yo la Tango, and many others. The group disbanded in 2000 after releasing four full-length albums. Helmuth and Ward then recruited Tim Welch (Catawampus Universe, Lily Pons, Prayers, The Hoss Cats), starting writing as Slo-fi, an act that has been playing around Lexington for years before re-emerging OTTO. Due to children and houses and busy lives, this first full-length record took many years to compete, and is just now being self-released.
Helmuth, who has a recording studio in Lexington and has recorded such acts as The Apples in Stereo, Bill Doss, Paul K and the Weatherman, Justin Wells, Warren Byron, Italian Beaches, Bear Medicine and many others, in addition to writing and recording many soundtracks for various independent filmmakers over the years. He is currently working on the first full-length album for the group People Planet, the band fronted by his daughter Daisy Helmuth and also featuring Jack Quinn, Madaline Farrar and Charlie Overman, who will open the "OTTO" release show. Rounding out the bill is local psychedelic blues act Johnny Conqueroo, featuring Grant Curless, Wils Quinn (Jack Quinn's brother) and Shawn Reynolds.
