Lexington’s Division of Parks & Recreation is sponsoring some great entertainment and family fun this summer. With a major concert series under way at MoonDance at Midnight Pass Amphitheater in Beaumont Centre, the Southland Jamboree kicking off next to Collins Bowling Lanes on Southland Drive, and the Southland Aquatic Center opening soon, there will be no shortage of summer family activities on Lexington’s south side.
Continuing through June 26, Parks & Recreation will present its popular Big Band & Jazz Series at the MoonDance Amphitheater every Tuesday night from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Concert goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic dinner. The concert series will continue July 10 through Aug. 28 at Ecton Park.
MoonDance Amphitheater will also be hosting “Cash,” a tribute to Johnny Cash, at 8 p.m. June 15. In its second year, this concert was a big hit last year, and if you didn’t see it, you missed a real treat. Tickets are $10 for adults and kids under 12 get in free.
MoonDance at Midnight Pass opened in 2011, and was built by Haymaker Development Company and the C.M. Gatton Trust as a gift to the community. The $2 million facility can seat up to 1,000 people on lawn chairs and blankets and provides a professional outdoor venue for not only local arts organization and musicians, but a variety of regional and national artists as well. The venue is located inside Beaumont Centre Circle at 1152 Monarch St. For more information and an up-to-date schedule of events at Moondance, please visit www.moondancelex.com.
Fans of bluegrass music will be happy to hear that the Southland Jamboree is returning to Southland Drive. The Jamboree will continue every Tuesday at 7 p.m., next to Collins Bowling Lanes, through Sept. 4.
Hosted by the Southland Association in partnership with LFUCG Parks & Recreation, the Southland Jamboree is now in its seventh season. This free concert series is made possible by the generous donation of concert space by Collins Bowling Lanes, the financial support of local area businesses and LFUCG, and the tireless efforts of Phil Wyant, attorney Billy Sherrow and members of the Southland Association Board of Directors.
In addition to a variety of music events, LFUCG Parks & Recreation opened Lexington’s Family Aquatic Centers at the end of May. The south side is home to the Southland Aquatic Center, which features water play areas for children and adults, diving boards, bath facilities, concession areas, and other amenities as well. The Southland Aquatic Center will be open 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Mon. – Sat. and 1 - 8 p.m. Sun. Admission is $4 for kids 15 and under, and $5 for those 16 and over. Summer pool passes are also available for purchase at any pool during normal hours.
Be sure to keep an eye out for other great LFUCG Parks & Recreation events this summer, including Free Friday Flicks at Jacobson Park, the Bluegrass 10K, and much more.
