Boa Boys
Saturday, August 14 // 4-5:15 p.m.
Forged deep in the basements of Louisville, KY, Boa Boys (formerly BOA) is a three-piece psych-groove rock band that blends elements of psychedelic, funk, and rock music in a unique but impressive way. What they lack in numbers, they make up with soulful, well-constructed harmonies matched with meaningful lyrics. Between the complex, yet catchy riffs and the precise, consistent drumming, Boa Boys are a band that will surely get you dancing.
Arriving on the scene just a few years ago, they have made waves with their live performances leading them to sell out hometown shows, gaining festival spots like Forecastle, touring nationally with The Nude Party, and supporting bands like Twin Peaks, White Reaper, Houndmouth, etc. For only being together a few years and still being some young guys from Kentucky, it will be very exciting to see where this band goes in the future.
Driftwood Gypsy
Saturday, August 14 // 4-5:15 p.m.
Having been together almost 10 years, the Lexington-area soul-funk-boogie band Driftwood Gypsy always guarantees its crowd a great, high-energy show. Although well-versed in their instruments, the group focuses on soulful vocal harmonies and aren't afraid to be heard singing in four-part acapella whilst on stage. Building a unique wall of sound from each member's eclectic musical taste, their mantra is "STAY WEIRD AND BOOGIE," and they are dedicated to making the audience dance.
Ernie Johnson From Detroit
Saturday, August 14 // 9:30-11 p.m.
Ernie Johnson From Detroit is a Cincinnati-based big band that blends funk, Afro-beat, and jazz with '70s psychedelia and hard rock to create a hypnotic, danceable sound that is both accessible and boundary pushing at the same time. Their stage show is known to be a high-energy, infectious dance party that centers on intense, spontaneous improvisation combined with tight, sophisticated compositions that live inside the groove.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2018 to critical acclaim, garnering praise from both critics and musicians alike, in a city known more for indie rock, folk, and bluegrass. They brought the house down at Crave's WRFL stage in 2019 and we are excited to welcome them back on Saturday, August 14, 2021!
FrigidKitty
Saturday, August 14 // 1-2 p.m.
Desperate Spirits’ artist FrigidKitty is the solo project of Lexington, Kentucky singer and multi-instrumentalist Kim Conlee. Released in December 2020, the tail-end of a pandemic year, FrigidKitty’s debut record, "Indulgence," is filled with deceptively warm tunes that resonate with the plexus of AOR, country, folk and AM pop, interwoven with the spirit of American music, casting spells against heartbreak and bitterness. Fellow Lexington creators Jeanne Vomit-Terror and Long Jumper join FrigidKitty to bring the record to the stage.
The Jesse Lees
Saturday, August 14 // 5:45-7 p.m.
Louisville, Kentucky based outkasts, The Jesse Lees are a group of guys that provide a timeless and powerful energy with elements of psychedelic rock, soul, and hip-hop. Just when you think that you have figured out their style, they show a new side of themselves, and scratch an itch you never knew you had.
Led by the unique and powerfully soulful vocals of Otis Junior, this rock outfit is undeniable and unforgettable.
Letters of Acceptance
Sunday, August 15 // 2:30-3:30 p.m.
LETTERS OF ACCEPTANCE is a group based in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky. It began many years ago as a series of unfinished recordings and occasional collaborations between Clinton Harlin Newman and John Harlan Norris. Upon both recently returning to their native Kentucky after several years away, the project picked up where it left off. Recording soon commenced in Clint's Louisville attic and they began to play a small number of acoustic duo shows in the summer of 2017. Now, having added Tim Welch on drums and Scott Whiddon on bass, LOA is releasing an ongoing series of recordings and playing full band shows beginning in fall 2018.
Lylak
Sunday, August 15 // 1-2 p.m.
With a name that hints at color and nature, Lylak makes a point to play with heart and leave the stage a bit more beautiful than they found it.
Interweaving vocals, from Gideon Maki (vox/guitar) and Elizabeth Varnado (vox/violin/guitar), present approachable lyrics which explore the lighter and darker aspects of life and love, memory and friendship.
Dynamic guitar licks catch the ear while swelling synths, moody violin, and intricate rhythms (Paul Varnado, bass/synth; Zachary Martin, drums) color the background.
Lylak’s third EP Leave it to Light showcases the benefit of letting disparate ideas simmer and steep to eventually meld together in the confidence of musical camaraderie.
Restless Leg String Band
Saturday, August 14 // 4-5:15 p.m.
This 5-piece acoustic collaboration takes traditional bluegrass, smashes it with a hammer and reassembles it in their own fashion. Creating and shaping their own sound of “Psyche-Grass” or “Jam-Grass,” their sound is marked by funky grooves, psychedelic improvisational jams touched by modern inspirations, and uplifting lyrics, all built on an underlying salute of classical overtones. Their sound is a unique reflection and representation of 21st Century art and string music.
Fresh off the release of their full-length, original album "Seasonal Progression," RLSB is one of the region's most exciting string bands, bringing an infectious energy and style to their performances. This year marks the first appearance from Restless Leg String Band on the WRFL Music Stage at Crave.
Sylmar
Sunday, August 15 // 4-5 p.m.
Heavily rooted in a mellow indie/dream-rock with hints of stoner jazz, groovy R&B and unpredictable bouts of frenetic energy, the Cincinnati-based band Sylmar has gained a loyal following via their engaging live shows, which are anchored by ever-captivating frontman Brian McCoullough. Come see what this difficult-to-describe band is all about on the WRFL Music Stage at Crave on Sunday, August 15!
Tee Dee Young
Sunday, August 15 // 5:30-7 p.m.
A blues legend in his own time, Tee Dee Young has definitely got the blues and a knack for “firing down on that guitar.” While playing his own unique style of the Blues, his dynamic stage presence, exciting harmony and energy will put you in the mood to groove. A native of Lexington Kentucky, Young has been performing and playing for audiences for years, getting his start playing the guitar by the railroad tracks and at the early age of 13. He was exposed to the life of blues learning the basics mentored by an elderly gentlemen, the late Mr. Harrison Coleman, and picked up singing from his late father, gospel singer Leonard Young. Young was also influenced by his late brother, George Young, who would constantly reminded him to never change his style in which he plays the blues.
At the age of 14, he formed his own band and throughout the rest of his teens Tee Dee Young would perform every chance he could get; in basements, private parties, talent shows and entering through back club doors. By the time he was twenty he was performing in prestigious venues such as: The Cotton Club, Albert King’s Club, Kington Mines and Club Zero. Further down the road he would make appearances at B.B. King’s Club & Isaac Hayes’ Club.
He would later find himself opening up for/performing with legendary and acclaimed Blues and R&B musicians such as: Johnny Rawls, Guitar Shorty, Big Bill Morgan, Albert King, Lil “Howling ” Wolf, Sir “Mack” Rice, Eddie Floyd, Malina Moye, Al Green, Denise Lasailes, Aretha Franklin, Cameo, Lakeside, James Brown, Alexander O’Neal, Vesta Williams, Miki Howard and many others.
