Military Missions, Inc., a Lexington volunteer non-profit organization that provides deployed military men and women with "care" boxes several times a year, will be assembling approximately 800 packages and boxes for shipment on June 20 at their offices on Boston Road.
Between 50 − 60 volunteers will be on hand at the activity, and nearly 25,000 items, such as eye drops, foot powder, socks and snack food, will be boxed.
In 2011, approximately 5,500 unit bags and care boxes were shipped overseas, with a total postage cost of $23,000. The organization attempts to send packages to all deployed service persons whose names have been received.
Interested volunteers need to e-mail volunteer@military-missions.org or call (859) 221-9477. Donations also are needed to cover the costs of shipping, which can be made online at www.military-mission.org.
On July 4, the organization will host its annual fundraiser from noon - 8 p.m. at Saul Good Restaurant and Pub (1808 Alysheba Way). The restaurant will offer half price on all food as an incentive to generate donations for Military Missions, and organization volunteers will be on hand to greet customers and give out information.
