The process to build Lexington’s next skatepark is underway at Berry Hill Park, and the city is embracing a process that will give skaters and the community a role in creating the park’s final design.
The city has budgeted $500,000 toward the project, according to a release from Councilmember George Myers’s office, though organizers with Friends for SkateParks, a local organization formed to foster the growing need for additional designated areas for the city’s action sports community, hope to be able to raise $1 million to construct a destination skatepark. The additional funds will come through private donations.
The organization is currently advertising a request for proposals for a qualified consultant, who will be required to integrate a number of goals into the final design, including working “with the community to design and develop a park that addresses the needs of beginner through experienced skaters and bikers,” according to the release.
Though the construction will be dependent upon the final designs proposed for the park, construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2014.
