Kentucky’s oldest outdoor theatre, Danville’s Pioneer Playhouse, will open its 66th season on June 5, 2015 with the new play written by comedian Lewis Black “One Slight Hitch.” The playhouse is seeking volunteers for mid-May through the end of the summer, for a season culminating with a performance by iconic actor/comedian Jimmie JJ Walker on August 20-22.
In addition to locals who occasionally give their time, the regular volunteer base consists of a crew that is expected to participate every night of production during the ten-week season. Volunteer duties might include helping in the box office, taking up tickets, passing out programs, ushering, running the concession stand, taking reservations and serving beverages to guests in the dining area. Some volunteers will even help with production; they might build and paint sets, sew and alter costumes, distribute posters and brochures and assist with landscaping, planting and tending to flowers and shrubs.
Volunteers may camp on the grounds at no charge (with access to water and electric hookups) and are invited to park their campers or RVs. Meals will be provided for 20 actors and crew along with the volunteers. The volunteers will have Sundays and Mondays free.
Dependable parties who are interested in getting a firsthand look at acting and behind-the-scenes theatre work should contact the Playhouse by phone at 1-866-597-5297 or by email at pioneerplayhouse@att.net. The famous Box Office was originally constructed as the train station for the 1956 MGM movie “Raintree Country”, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift, which was filmed in Danville.
