Lexington, KY - Mayor Jim Newberry, who won election in a 2006 landslide against incumbent Teresa Isaac, today confirmed that he will seek reelection.
"I have every intention of seeking reelection. But this is not the time to focus on politics," Newberry said. "There will be plenty of time for that when we get closer to 2010."
Newberry said he is concentrating on navigating an increasingly difficult economic climate. "Right now my focus is on the economic crisis, which is driving down city revenues and putting people out of work. I have to present a balanced city budget to Council in a month, and that means again tightening our belt. I am also focused on applying for stimulus funds in hopes of producing much needed jobs."
Former Mayor Teresa Isaac has confirmed that she is considering running for a return to the office. Vice Mayor Jim Gray has also been mentioned as a possible challenger.
