Lexington, KY - A 2.6 mile path of two-lane U.S. Route 25 between Iron Works Pike and Georgetown is undergoing a $16 million transformation to double its width.
Officials on Monday held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the project that is already well underway to expand U.S. 25 from Iron Works Pike to Etter Lane in Georgetown from two to four-lanes.
The new version of the road snakes around the east and west sides of the existing two-lane thoroughfare that carts thousands of people a day between the two cities.
“This stretch of road is so critical for commuters from Georgetown to Lexington and vice versa. Scott County and Georgetown is one of the fastest growing communities in Kentucky. We’ve got great things going on,” said Sen. Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown) about the project.
He lauds the growth occurring along the formerly and still somewhat rural stretch including a Kroger Marketplace, which is in the works at the northern end of the road.
“There’re thousands and thousands of cars on that road every day and it’s going to make the commute much better and safer for all concerned,” he said.
The project, which should be completed in the next 15-months, was awarded to L-M Asphalt Partners Ltd., with Nally Gibson LLC of Georgetown to do the paving.
The current road plan passed by the legislature calls for another three-mile stretch of the road south from Iron Works Pike to Spurr Road in Lexington to be widened in the future. Being part of the General Assembly’s 6-Year Road Plan makes the next phase possible, but Thayer noted the amount of time the area currently under construction sat in the so-called 6-Year Road Plan well exceeded six years.
Nonetheless, Thayer said with work finally under way, the area’s commuters and residents should see a boon from the road’s widening.
“You just never know what other kinds of businesses might end up situating themselves on that route because of the easy access to Lexington and Georgetown,” he said.
