Maternity and children’s wear ‘Blossom’ with new store

Stumbling upon a modest but charming retail space on Euclid Avenue back in November, Rebecca Kent knew immediately that the 750-square-foot spot was the perfect place to open up her first business.
Three months later, Kent became the owner of what is now Blossom, a high quality, fashion-forward boutique specializing in maternity and children’s clothing, and baby essential items.
Formerly the location for Cradle Will Rock, Kent obtained the space from the previous owners and local designer, Rhonda Smith –– who still produces handmade attire to be sold in the store –– in December. The store opened on Feb. 2, Kent’s birthday.
Recognizing an opportunity to provide fashionable, hip clothing for mommies-to-be and kids in the Lexington area, Kent, a mother of three young children, decided to spice up the Bluegrass with her new boutique.
“After having three kids, I realized that there was such a need for good maternity wear here in the Lexington area, and the central Kentucky area in general,” she said.
But Kent didn’t stop at maternity; she decided to sell children’s clothing and baby essential items, too –– items that aren’t typically found in maternity stores. The store boasts maternity brands, such as Citizens of Humanity and Paige Denim, and children’s brands like Teach Collection and Stewart Weitzman.
“It’s a very niche market when you limit yourself to just maternity wear,” Kent said. “I want mothers to keep coming in, even after they’ve had their babies.”
With the positive reception Blossom has received from the neighborhood and surrounding Lexington community, Kent already has big plans for the budding boutique. Hosting baby showers, offering gift registry and even planning homemade baby food workshops, Kent has started to embrace the opportunities that make Blossom integral to an early mother’s needs.
And the store’s location, in the middle of the Chevy Chase commercial district, is prime real estate for attracting new customers.
“It’s just such a thriving new area with new moms, parents, young adults…people that are in a stage of their life of having and raising kids,” she said.
