"Pink" water is flowing in the Triangle Park and Lexington Financial Center fountains to announce the showing of “Pretty in Pink,” the first movie in the new “Fountain Films on Friday” series presented by Hilliard Lyons (see schedule below.) The event serves as the kickoff of the Lexington Film League’s second annual Harry Dean Stanton Festival.
The debut of the “Fountain Films on Friday” summer series is sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lexington. The non-toxic dye (which organizers are trying to make appear more pink) was developed by a Kansas City cancer survivor who works with the Komen foundation in support of the organization's mission, according to Downtown Lexington Corporation President Renee Jackson. "The fountains' pink water not only helps to promote our first movie 'Pretty in Pink,' it also brings awareness to the fight against breast cancer," Jackson said.
Jackson said the dye has been checked by the city's Division of Environmental Policy and deemed safe.
The coinciding Harry Dean Stanton Festival honors the now 85 year old character actor who was born in West Irvine, Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky.
Over the weekend of May 18-20, the festival will screen selections from among the scores of Stanton’s films at various downtown venues, including the Kentucky Theatre, the newly remodeled Central Library Farish Theater, The Green Lantern and Triangle Park (see schedule below.)
Triangle Park will be transformed into an outdoor movie theater complete with an inflatable screen on selected Friday evenings through the summer. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a free movie. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
All movies will begin at dark and are produced by New Heights, www.newheights.biz and coordinated by Downtown Lexington Corporation, www.downtownlex.com
