Bill Coleman was an internationally known trumpet player who hailed from Centerville, a small village in Bourbon County KY. However, he was not famous in his home country. Taking place at multiple locations in Paris, Kenntucky, this annual event pays homage to the late jazz musician.
Friday, April 26: A Conversation with Franćois Desbrosses, president of Le HOT CLUB de France and a jazz aficionado who knew Bill Coleman when he was performing and living in France. This opening event for the Bill Coleman Jazz Weekend, takes place at the Hopewell Museum, 800 Pleasant St., Paris, Ky 6:30-7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.
Saturday, April 27: The Walnut Street Ramblers, a classic jazz ensemble led by Dr.Dick Domek, with La'Shelle Allen (AKA Sister LaLa), will play jazz from the era during which Bill Coleman was internationally known as excellent trumpet player: the 1930's to his death in 1981. Tickets include a full BBQ meal and cocktails. $75 per person. 6:30-10 p.m.The Oasis, 610 Main St. Paris, Ky.
Sunday, April 28: A free concert featuring Dr. Keith McCutchen and the McCutchen Quintet, with Craig Bailey (sax); Marlin McKay (trumpet); Jim Anderson (bass); Paul Deatherage (drums); and McCutchen (keyboard). They will play traditional standards, their own compositions, and some Herbie Hancock classics. Students and music lovers are encouraged to attend. 2 p.m at the Bourbon County High School Auditorium, 3343 Lexington Road, Paris, KY. Free and open to the public.
