On Saturday, March 16th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Lyric Theater and Cultural Arts Center will host Project Ricochet’s Barbershop Showcase and Public Health Fair. Project Ricochet works to increase health equity by partnering with Anthem Medicaid, The Kentucky Department of Public Health: Office of Health Equity, and community partners to encourage, empower, and educate African American men to manage their health. Attendees will enjoy live music, free health assessments, a panel discussion and barber showcase led by some of the most talented barbers in Lexington. Also, enjoy ETHER, an art exhibit by Bryce Oquaye.
Background
Project Ricochet’s Barbershop Initiative was designed to develop and strengthen relationships between community health workers and barbers. In many communities, the barbershop is more than just a place for a haircut. The barbershop is a gathering place and perfect venue for African American men to receive potentially life-saving health screenings and information. So far, over 700 participants have benefited from this initiative.
Project Ricochet’s President and Co-founder Dr. Abeni El-Amin, adds, “With the alarming health disparities facing African American communities, particularly in areas such as hypertension, diabetes, and mental health, Project Ricochet is dedicated to fostering a culture of health empowerment. Through strategic partnerships with local barbershops, we provide tailored health education sessions, screenings and referrals to community health services, empowering patrons to take control of their health.”
