In 2008, LexArts partnered with the Lexington Urban-Fayette County Government to start the Lexington Outdoor Mural Project, bringing together neighborhoods, businesses, city government officials and artists in an effort to fuel unity between local businesses and artists while adding elegance to Lexington via public art. Included in the project was this piece by artist Michael Burrell on the side of North Limestone bar and music venue Al’s Bar. Combining images of local musicians Les McCain, Duke Madison and the Smoke Richardson Band, the mural depicts lively historical vignettes from Lexington’s north side with a special emphasis on the area’s musical history.
