Artist: Andrew Hem
Location: Barrow Building, 139 W. Short St.
Created by Los Angeles studio artist Andrew Hem, this mural was co-sponsored by Transylvania University professors Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova to commemorate their 2012 community engagement project, the Lexington Tattoo Project, in the form of street art. The mural depicts five children, one of whom has the word “universe” on his chest – a visual ode to the tattoo project, which facilitated dozens of local tattoos based on a poem called “The _______ of the Universe: A Love Story.” While the mural was originally set to stretch nearly the entire wall, it ended up covering only half due to machinery problems, which set the mural back by days.
