WRFL 88.1, the University of Kentucky’s college and community radio station, has announced several lineup additions and a breakdown of artists by day for the 5th annual Boomslang: A Celebration Sound and Art. The three-day festival will take place Sept. 20-22 at multiple venues in Lexington, including Cosmic Charlie’s, Lynagh’s, Natasha’s Bar & Bistro, Buster’s Billiards & Backroom and Embrace Church.
Boomslang will welcome doom and metal acts Pallbearer, Thou, Young Widows and (ohlm) to Saturday’s Doomslang showcase at Embrace Church; other additions to the 2013 line-up, which already features Blonde Redhead, Clinic, Youth Lagoon, ADULT., Com Truise and many others, include Lexington hip hop artist Sheisty Khrist, Southern rap duo CunninLynguists, self-described “post-apocalyptic pop” artist Fielded, and DIY punk trio Potty Mouth. Boomslang will also partner with Smiley Pete Publishing’s inaugural food and music festival Crave Lexington to present a kid-friendly show with local band Too Many Drummers. Weekend festival passes are available at www.boomslangfest.com and at various outlets in Lexington and Louisville, including CD Central, Third Street Stuff, Street Scene / Coffee Times, Underground Sound, Morris Book Shop and Sqecial Media. Weekend passes cost $60 for University of Kentucky students and $75 for non-students. The complete schedule and a limited number of tickets for individual showcases will be available in mid-August.
In addition to Boomslang concerts, which will take place at venues throughout Lexington, Boomslang will host a number of satellite events in support of the arts. A Boomslang kickoff party, SCRAP, featuring art installations by several local visual artists, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the north Lexington space Griffin’s Modern Motel. Boomslang is pleased to partner with the Lexington Film League to present Filmslang, a cinematic celebration which will include a showcase of local music videos and several additional film screenings and events during the week leading up to Boomslang. Boomslang will also partner with the Kentucky Women Writers Conference to present the Wild Women of Poetry Slam on Sept. 20 with featured poet Sonya Renee Taylor and special celebrity judge Saul Williams, and will host an after-party featuring a spoken-word performance by Williams. And WRFL’s very own Katerina Stoykova-Klemer, host of Accents: A Radio Show for Literature, Art, and Culture, will host the literary event Stars with Accents: A Literary Celebration, on Sept. 22. Boomslang’s third annual Queerslang, a celebration of Lexington’s queer community and its supporters, will also hold skill-share workshops and a late-night dance party during the weekend of the festival.
