Lexington, KY - Citing recent illness. Kentucky State Education Commissioner Jon E. Draud has tendered his resignation, effective in February.
Draud, who suffered a mild stroke in September said in a statement issued by his office today, "I have informed Joe Brothers, chair of the state Board of Education, that I am resigning my position as commissioner of education for the state of Kentucky. While I feel that I have provided outstanding leadership during my illness, it has caused me to rethink my priorities."
There has been no mention of a possible successor. Fayette County Schools Superintendent Stu Silberman said he is not a candidate. "I am firmly committed to the Fayette County Public Schools. As you know, when I came here four and a half years ago I made a commitment of 10 years to our district and I am keeping my word to honor that commitment."
Draud, a former state legislator, has served as commissioner since 2007.
The former principal and teacher served as associate professor of education at Northern Kentucky University. He was a member of the Kenton County Board of Education.
