Lexington, Ky. - There will be no merger of Sayre School and the Lexington School. That's the recommendation of a joint task force established in mid June to study and weigh to positives and negatives of combining the two prestigious private schools.
A memo sent to faculty and staff states, "The Joint TLS-Sayre Task Force after a second meeting decided not to pursue the idea of joining the two schools and is making that recommendation to their respective boards. At this time The Lexington School has decided to honor its founding vision and remain a Preschool through 8th grade educational institution. Both schools feel that each represents an important niche in the Lexington community. Each schools' constituents have expressed this same feeling passionately, consistently, and thoughtfully over the last four weeks. Through this process both schools have learned a great deal about their mutual interests as independent educational institutions and have agreed to continue to work closely together for the benefit of our community."
The schools had hired retired Transylvania University president Charles Shearer to chair and facilitate the task force, which was to meet four times over the summer to weigh the prospects of a merger. But after only two meetings, the task force has concluded that the two schools should remain independent.
