South African winemaker Graham Beck has died at age 80. Beck, owner of historic Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, died in London on Monday.
"Our industry mourns the loss of Graham Beck today. He was a great businessman, competitor and horseman," said Keeneland president Nick Nicholson.
In addition to gaining international notice as a breeder of fine thoroughbreds, Beck also was known for his South African wines. "He lived life to the fullest and was a joy to be around. He loved Gainesway Farm and was an incredible steward of the land. More importantly, though, he was wonderful human being who fostered great devotion and admiration among those who were associated with him. His generosity touched many and will be a significant part of his legacy. Our thoughts go out to his wife Rhona, his son Antony and their family during this difficult time," Nicholson noted in a statement.
Beck's son, Anthony serves as president of Gainesway Farm, one of the world's leading breeders.
The elder Beck leaves a total of four farms, according to Bloomberg.com. "It's business as usual, that was his wish," Etienne Heyns, marketing manager of Graham Beck Wines, told Bloomberg.com in a telephone interview from Franschhoek, near Cape Town. Heyns said Beck's body is being flown to Israel today for burial.
