Lafayette Senior high school graduates Despina Wilson and Shelby Ware have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award.
Despina and Shelby were awarded for their project: The Contemplation Pavilion with the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program. Despina has been working hard within the Girl Scouts for 9 years and feels "The Girl Scouts not only shapes our girls, but also our community and the next generation."
To complete the requirements to obtain the highest award in Girl Scouting, Despina: Obtained materials for the project through emails, phone conversations, and many meetings to receive donations for the pavilion; Worked together with the assistance of BDVA and Contractor Michael Ware of Superior Maintenance to build the pavilion; Connected with her community to provide awareness of the needs of the BDVA.
Shelby's contributions to the project included: creating and shared an informational brochure that brought awareness to the needs of the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program; bringing community groups together to build a pathway and brick patio space; and landscaping the outdoor pavilion area with donated flowers, trees, and mulch. Shelby said of the project, “I enlisted the support of the Bluegrass community to show their love and support for the women at the [BDVA]. The community is often times more than willing to help; they just need to be asked.”
